The Ryedale Family History Group is dedicated to helping people find their ancestors - not only in the Ryedale area, but absolutely anywhere, although we do, of course, concentrate on the Ryedale area, as designated by the Ryedale District Council.
We are five years old, having started in July 2005. We have meetings at various venues around Ryedale, on the third Wednesday of each month. See our website for details of when and where http://www.ryedalefamilyhistory.org/. We always have a speaker or speakers at our meetings, on a variety of subjects relating to family and local history.
Our Research Room is open to all, every Thursday from 10am to 3pm at Hovingham Village Hall. YO62 4LF. Here we have volunteers to help locating ancestors and several computers online so that you can do it yourself!
Volunteers are creating resources to assist others in finding their roots, such as transcriptions of parish registers, recording of monumental inscriptions in churchyards and cemeteries, photographing sites in the area, collecting and preserving historic documents and artefacts.
We publish a quarterly journal, called "Ryedale Roots" which is distributed to all our members. Articles for inclusion in this publication are welcomed. The deadline is the last Friday in the month preceeding publication - publication months are January, April, July and October. We get many enquiries from researchers worldwide and sometimes publish queries in Ryedale Roots or on our website, so do have a look in and see if you can help someone to find their ancestors!
Our current membership is 320, worldwide.
