Pickering workhouse
Doing some research on Pickering workhouse. Any contributions gratefully received.
The pre-1837 w'house was in Undercliffe: anyone know its location? Anyone know of an early map that might show it?

Publications
Lockton and Levisham Heritage group are hoping soon to publish 2 booklets. One is about the Monastic Grange on Levisham Moor, where Malton Priory established a sheep farm in the early years of the 13th century. The remains can still be traced on the ground, and there are also documents relating to it.
The second is about more recent events - about how the 2 villages had got their first piped water supply.
Look out for these publications!

Lockton and Levisham new project
The group are working with archaeologist Dave Hunter on an investigation into the water scheme that brought water up to the village for the first time in the 1890s. They are looking at various remains by the stream.

Morleys and Garnetts
Other research from the Lockton and Levisham Heritage groups concerns two families - the Morley and the Garnetts - who, in 1830, were given money from the Poor Fund to enable them to emigrate to North America. We have details of the food they were given - and what it cost - for the journey and we believe they left Whitby in or around April 1830. But what happened to them when - if - they arrived in America, we don't know.
